Ceramic versus stainless steel filling pumps
Pumps made from monolithic ceramic components
NEOCERAM pumps do not have surface coatings. They are manufactured from fully dense monolithic ceramic components, made with exclusive compounds designated to deliver superior performance in sterile applications: Pharmalox® and Pharmazirc®. Thanks to their mix of material properties, and together with the top surface finish achieved by grinding, our ceramic pumps do not show any surface defect, fitfulness or flaws.
Stainless steel pumps
Chromium coated stainless steel pumps are manufactured from a soft stainless steel core on which an harder chromium layer is electro deposited. Other harder coatings can be further deposited to improve wear resistance of chromed surfaces. Of gaining interest is the use of a very thin coating (2 to 5 microns) of PVD deposited Chromium Nitride on hard chromed pistons. Despite its not improved friction coefficient against hard chromium and moderate corrosion resistance, it allows ceramic-like surface hardness on pistons (not possible however to deposit PVD coating on cylinders).
Problems with coatings
Due to the presence of coatings, their deposition technique and adhesion issues on the lower substrate, coated stainless steel surfaces and ceramic surfaces present differences; discover more in http://www.neoceram.com/technical-support/
